The Owl Dress

Sarah's new dress. She doesn't want to take it off, even when I told her I'd take it home to put another button on the back. I told her I'd bring it back, and got a kiss in return. Daddy said, "She'll grow into it." But Sarah thought it fit perfectly!

Tuesday Tutorial: Sew Easy Toddler Dress

I followed this tutorial, except I didn't have any elastic small enough for the hem to be the casing, so I just turned everything upside down and backwards and sewed a new casing, using the hems as, well, hems. And even with the extra step, it still only took me 1/2 hour! This tute is from Blooms n Bugs. The picture is the dress I made. Have fun!

Make It Like Me Monday

Ha! Monday, and here's the tutorial for this week. (For once I made it on Monday instead of Tuesday!)

Make a two-colored headband (turban style)

Start with 2 pieces of contrasting fleece 22" long (or the circumference of your head) x 4".

Lay one down one way and the other crossing a little to the left of midpoint, perpendicular to the first, so it forms a cross. Then fold the first one over the second one.

Next fold the second strip over the first strip...
...and twist so that they connect like this:
Then stack all four ends together and pin. Sew all four layers, clip threads, and turn right side out. Here you see the seam from the inside.

And—voila! You've made another variation on my updated vintage headband!

Make it Monday... on Tuesday

Did it again. Forgot it was Monday until it was almost Tuesday. I think I'm gonna have to tell myself the goal is Make-it Sunday, so I'll have it up by Monday. :(

My Craftsy group meets the last Wednesday evening of every month, and last time we were talking about making our own name tags that would not only give our names, but help define us, too. It's lovely looking at people's crafts and learning a bit about who they are! So I'm going to show you mine, and give you some hints on how to make one yourself.

1) Choose a shape. I chose round, because it is such a whole shape (or a hole shape!(; ). You can choose any shape you want because it needs to reflect who you are.

2) Gather your materials. This one is wide open. Maybe you want to sew yours, maybe to paint it, or stamp it. I wanted mixed media.

3) Go to it! Use the shape as a canvas to tell the world not only what your name is, but who you are as well.

4) Can other people tell something about you from your tag? I hope so.

I used a small embroidery hoop; an old one with a bent-metal spring at the top.

Here's what it looked like when the first piece had been positioned
and I had covered it with Modge Podge.

After it dried, the Modge Podge was crystal-clear, and the piece
was now protected.

Here's the final result. The dress has a button at the top, and there is string swirling all around the whole area. A pin with four girls dancing was pinned to the bottom. Half-rounds left over from another project were glued to the bottom of the hoop, and a button held the strings from a
small tag that has my name on both sides. Last, I tied a gorgeous old satin ribbon around the
spring at the top and made a "necklace" out of it. I can't wait to wear it to the next meeting!

She's been talking in her sleep....

This has nothing to do with sewing, but it is just "sew" like me!

My husband Jeff says I talk in my sleep. While that's not unusual, it's the quality of what I say that is interesting. Night before last, I was talking away, obviously having a conversation with someone, when he heard me say, "That's special birdseed. It's what we feed the kangaroos!"

Conversation with my brother Mike after he read this post:
Mike: I didn't know kangaroos were native to that area of Texas... are you starting up another venture?
Me: Apparently.
Mike: So.. what's it called? Wollman's Kangaroo and Birdseed Farms of Texas?
Me: I was thinking more like Birdseed-In-A-Pouch. Or maybe Pockets-Of-Birdseed.
Mike: How about Hopalong Birdseed? Maybe you should consider starting a zoo.
Me: No. Zoos are out of fashion. Maybe an animal preserve. No. Judy (Mike's wife) does the preserves. Ask her if she needs any kangaroo or birdseed.
Mike: So you're looking for a recipe for seedless kangaroo preserves?
Me: Actually, it would be better if we could combine the kangaroo and birdseed. We could call the preserves Australian Jumping Beans. Oh, wait. They're seeds. Does she have a recipe for kangaroo and beans? Maybe we should ask Mom. She's older, so she is wiser. What do you think?
Mike: Well, the last time we tried raising kangaroos, we didn't have much luck. Casey (his son) thinks we may have planted them too deep... but I think we're just too far north. As far as birdseeds, we have a flock of Rhode Island Reds that lay eight to ten seeds a day, but when we planted those, they didn't come up either.

Yeah, I think you'd better ask Mom about a good recipe. She could be wiser than we.

UPDATE: Mike said he's planting dogwood this year so he can get some puppies.
